What is hypnosis?

and frequently asked questions

Hypnosis is simply a state of highly focused concentration and heightened awareness. You unknowingly experience this natural state every day. It's just a way of tuning out distracting thoughts, and focusing your attention, just as you do when you're daydreaming, or when totally absorbed in a film, book, TV show, or favourite hobby, or even when driving.

Hypnosis is thought to work by altering your state of consciousness, in such a way that the analytical left-hand side of the brain is quietened down, while the non-analytical right-hand side is made more alert. This allows the subconscious mind to come to the fore, where it is able to accept suggestions more easily. The subconscious mind contains all your memories and experiences, and controls your thoughts and behaviors, and this is the part which has to change for your behavior and physical state to alter.

Can I be Hypnotised?

Most people can achieve a state of hypnosis easily as itÂ’s a most natural state that we go in and out of on a regular basis its like day dreaming or being ultra focused on something to the exclusion of everything else going on around.

Will I be asleep?

No, hypnosis is not sleep, in order for you to be in the correct state for suggestion therapy it is required that your brain be in the range between alpha and theta wave activity and in sleep your brain would be in the delta range which would be deep sleep and not conducive to suggestion therapy.  You will be aware of what is going on and said but its just like you are daydreaming and cant be bothered to move, a truly wonderful feeling!

Can I be made to do something I don't want to?

NO you are in control at all times and could if you wished at any time, simply open your eyes and come out of trance and as you are having hypnosis for change that you want then you would not want to resist the suggestions being made.

Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes its is safe, proven therapy with no side effects within the care of a properly trained professional. I am a member of the General Hypnotherapy Register and am bound by a code of Ethics

How many sessions do I need?

This depends on, the condition being treated, how the person responds to treatment and the persons commitment and desire to bring about the changes. Some issues can be dealt with in a single session i.e. smoking and phobias and others may require further sessions although hypnotherapy and NLP are NOT counseling in that they are solution focused and orientating towards resolution of problems in a much shorter period of time with real tools to help you to make the changes you want.
